Theme year 2019: People and mobility
People were once again at the heart of the 2019 themed year: in the topics and also directly in the various events and activities that the MAINZER WISSENSCHAFTSALLIANZ 2019 invited people to take part in.
Mobility is a basic human need. Mobility promotes independence from constraints and restrictions and conveys a sense of freedom. Mobility enables the exchange of goods, ideas, and people. The digital revolution allows us mobility on a previously unimaginable scale.
However, the increasing mobility of our society is also one of the greatest challenges we face. Migration, globalization, commuting, and the associated traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and social problems are challenges that all societies, but especially politics and business, must face.
Innovations and science-based approaches and solutions can make a significant contribution to overcoming these challenges. For this reason, strong research and close cooperation between researchers and other actors in our society are of central importance.
With the theme years, we draw public attention to a selected aspect of these common challenges. The Mainz theme years are intended as a regional framework for strengthening and objectifying social discourse, promoting dialogue, and initiating cooperation. The Mainz theme years aim to encourage researchers and non-researchers alike to think and think outside the box, offering space for new ideas and projects.
Green City Master Plan
With its M³ "Green City Mainz" master plan (opens in a new tab), the state capital of Mainz is participating in the "Clean Air Immediate Action Program 2017-2020" sponsored by the German federal government. M³ stands for integrated, intelligent, and networked mobility in Mainz. The focus of the plan ranges from subsidies for electric vehicles to measures to increase bicycle traffic to the digitization and networking of transport modes. The master plan was adopted in 2018. 2019 was therefore a good year to bring municipal concepts and projects more closely together with Mainz's scientific community and to foster public discourse.
People and mobility - a broad field
During the theme year, we interpreted people and mobility in a broad sense: topics ranged from intelligent or sustainable mobility concepts in transportation to the challenges of remaining mobile in old age and issues of displacement and migration.
