Invitation to the Roman Day on Sunday, April 26
Roman Rheinhessen opens its doors again: on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Roman Day will once again be a lively experience for anyone interested in Roman history and culture. The Roman Day has been a fixture in the region since 1994 and attracts numerous visitors every year who want to immerse themselves in the world of the Romans.
The Alzey City Museum will kick off the event on Saturday, April 25, with a Roman flash mob starting at 4 p.m. At 6 p.m., Prof. Dr. Michael Sommer will deliver the opening lecture on the topic “Debile Despots? Caligula, Nero, and Other Villains.” The opening will be supported by Nünnerich-Asmus Verlag, which will present relevant literature for all ages at the book table.
Roman Day itself will take place across several locations in Rheinhessen. In various cities and towns, visitors can experience Roman history up close. Archaeological tours, vivid reenactments of Roman military strategies, and hands-on activities promise a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world. For families, there are interactive programs where children can follow in the footsteps of the Romans and learn more about ancient life in a playful way.
Participating venues include the Museum am Strom in Bingen, the Villa Rustica in the Binger Wald, the Museum at the Imperial Palace in Ingelheim, the Museum of the City of Worms at the Andreasstift, the Museum am Siliusstein in Dienheim, St. George’s Chapel in Heidesheim, the Sironabad in Nierstein, the Stadecken-Elsheim History and Heritage Society, and the Palace Villa in Mauchenheim.
Roman Day 2026 is part of the regional theme year “Romans in Rheinhessen” organized by Regional Cultural Management Rheinhessen. The program, including the activities for Roman Day, can be viewed at www.rheinhessen.de (opens in a new tab).
