Update of the integrated development concept for Mainz city center (IEK 2026)
Redesign of Karmeliterplatz and Brückenplatz
Karmeliterplatz and Brückenplatz are set to be redesigned to improve the quality of the public space and enhance the connection between the city center and the banks of the Rhine for pedestrians and cyclists. To ensure that the squares meet the needs of their users, we would like to invite you to share your experiences, ideas, and suggestions. Please take about 10 minutes to fill out the questionnaire below. Participation is voluntary and anonymous.
Alternatively, you can also share your suggestions in person at a public participation event on November 17, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 8:00 p.m. in the foyer of the Stadthaus Große Bleiche.
Results
As part of the IEK update, the final concept—including a list of measures—was developed following an extensive process involving various forms of public engagement with the public, political representatives, downtown stakeholders, and the city administration. The results were publicly displayed on January 27, 2026, at the Rheingoldhalle and approved by the City Council on March 25, 2026. Below you will find the displayed results as well as the approved concept:
Outlook
Once the plan has been approved, the measures must be prioritized. This process is currently underway. Funding opportunities are also being explored.
Information on the process
The Integrated Development Concept for the City Center (IEK) from 2015 established itself as an effective and successful strategic roadmap for the further development of Mainz’s city center. After about 10 years, new impetus was needed, which is why an updated version of the concept (IEK 2026) was developed.
The update primarily addressed issues that have gained increasing importance in recent years, such as climate adaptation. In addition to developing new measures, the process also included a review of measures from the IEK 2015 that had not yet been implemented. Ongoing projects were incorporated into the updated list of measures, while other measures were refined based on suggestions from the update process. If approved, the updated Integrated Development Concept could serve as the basis for applying for urban development funding in the coming years.
On this platform, you can learn about the objectives, process structure, and opportunities for participation in the update of the IEK Downtown, as well as the current status. Information on the original IEK Downtown from 2015 and the interim review of IEK measures from 2022 can also be found here.
