Keeping your home dry: heavy rain prevention in Mainz
Joint task of heavy rain prevention
If more rain falls in a very short period of time than the underground sewer system can handle, flooding can occur even far from major bodies of water. What makes this particularly tricky is that the exact location and timing of such heavy rain events are nearly impossible to predict.
This makes prevention essential! In public areas, Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz implements measures on behalf of the City of Mainz and keeps the sewer system and waterways in good working order at all times.
On private properties, the respective owners are responsible—but they also receive support from Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz: through the development of heavy rain management plans for individual neighborhoods, as well as tailored advice and information.

Heavy rain prevention concepts for the Mainz districts
In 2023, Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz began developing heavy rain management plans for individual city districts on behalf of the city and with funding from the Rhineland-Palatinate MINISTRY OF CLIMATE PROTECTION, ENVIRONMENT, ENERGY, AND MOBILITY.
To this end, we are working with the respective district mayors and advisory boards to identify potential sources of danger. Based on the results, measures will be developed to determine how and where water can be drained to minimize damage.
Before they are finalized, the heavy rain management plans will be presented at town hall meetings in the respective districts and discussed with residents. The final heavy rain management plans will then be available for free download on our website and presented at the Mainz Environmental Store.
We started with Ebersheim and Finthen; the districts of Drais, Hechtsheim, and Marienborn will follow in 2026.
