Field of application
The Mainz Fire Department covers an area of around 98 km² with over 220,000 residents. In addition, there are tens of thousands of commuters, visitors, and travelers every day who influence the number of calls for service.
Geographical and infrastructural features
-
Location on the Rhine: 21 kilometers of riverbank on one of Europe's busiest waterways. In addition to shipping on the Rhine, industrial, customs, and inland ports are also locations relevant to the fire department. The operational concepts on the Rhine are closely coordinated with the fire departments on the right bank of the Rhine.
-
Motorway junction (A60/A63): With two Rhine bridges to Hesse and high traffic volumes, the motorway with the tunnel at Hechtsheim is another key area.
-
Rail traffic: Several main lines and shunting areas in the city, as well as two railway tunnels at the main station, require special rescue concepts.
Districts and building structure
-
Densely built-up old town with narrow streets and historic buildings, bustling with locals and tourists
-
Metropolitan districts such as Mombach or Weisenau with mixed residential and industrial development
-
Village-like suburbs such as Drais or Ebersheim, where longer travel distances and agricultural businesses create special operating conditions
Special properties and risks
-
Industrial and commercial areas, especially in the Mombach district, with chemical and logistics use
-
High-rise buildings and large residential complexes with special operational concepts
-
Sports and event venues, such as the MEWA ARENA
-
Schools, colleges, and Johannes Gutenberg University with laboratory and research facilities
- The University Medical Center Mainz, the largest hospital in Rhineland-Palatinate, is located in the operational area. The extensive facility comprises over 60 clinics and institutes. It combines complex building technology, laboratory areas, hazardous substances, and patients with limited mobility.
-
Media locations such as ZDF and SWR with complex building technology
-
Religious and cultural institutions such as Mainz Cathedral with a high number of visitors
This mixture of historic buildings, dense inner-city development, critical infrastructure, and transportation hubs places high demands on the planning, training, and technical equipment of the Mainz Fire Department.
