Fire department 2035

Here we regularly inform you about the current status of our project for planning the fire department and civil protection in Mainz and provide an outlook for the coming months.

Requirements planning

What is it about?

Resource planning is not merely an administrative project; it affects the entire Mainz Fire Department. It will shape how we are organized, how we work, and how we are equipped in the future.

For the professional fire department, the focus is primarily on protection goals, staffing levels, and response times. For the volunteer fire department, the goal is to strengthen volunteerism in the long term and create clear prospects for stations and their integration into operational concepts. Disaster control and crisis management are also being further developed—particularly with regard to leadership structures and the ability to act in special situations.

In short: The project establishes the strategic framework for the Mainz Fire Department 2035—with the goal of ensuring long-term effectiveness, resilience, and future-proofing.

Together, we are developing a stable and sustainable foundation for the direction of our fire department—well-thought-out, professionally sound, and forward-looking.

  • Safety standards for Mainz, with a future population of around 250,000
  • Strengthening the professional and volunteer fire departments
  • Modern crisis management
  • High resilience to climate change, digitalization, and complex hazardous situations

What has happened so far?

At the start of the project, several internal meetings were held to identify and prioritize the most important issues—such as protection objectives, response times, locations, and topics like digitalization and volunteer work. The goal was to establish a shared understanding of the tasks ahead in the coming years.

At the same time, a project group and a steering committee were established to ensure clear responsibilities and transparent decision-making. Representatives from all key areas of the fire department and administration are involved.

Following the call for proposals, the firm antwortING was commissioned. We are currently coordinating with the consultant on the content and organization of the project: the approach, methodology, timeline, and participation will be defined before the actual analysis begins.

What is currently happening?

  • Project Organization
  • Data Collection & Status Analysis
  • Evaluation of operational data and response times
  • Hazard and risk analysis
  • Location and Accessibility Analyses

What will happen in the next six months?

Over the coming months, the spatial and risk analysis will be completed. This process will integrate operational data, risk analyses, and urban development trends. This will enable the creation of realistic scenarios and an assessment of the current level of security. This will result in specific tasks and areas of action.

Subsequently, various site models will be developed and compared with one another—with the goal of arriving at a transparent and well-founded recommendation. In parallel, organizational structures, staffing requirements, and leadership frameworks will be reviewed and refined.

The concept for volunteer work and municipal crisis management will also be examined in greater detail to create stable, long-term structures. Interim results will be presented openly and discussed collectively before important decisions are prepared.
