"Do you need a bin liner or an ashtray?"
From Friday, 01.05.2026, the environmental scouts will again be offering support for proper waste disposal on the banks of the Rhine on behalf of the City of Mainz. The environmental scouts are regularly out and about on the banks of the Rhine on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays.
They provide residents with trash bags and point out the nearest public trash can. Pocket ashtrays are also available. Once cigarette butts end up in the grass, they are difficult to pick up and contaminate the groundwater.
Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Environmental Department: “We all want a clean Mainz. Anyone who throws trash on the street or in the grass instead of in a trash can pollutes the environment and harms people, animals, and plants. There are plenty of trash cans along the Rhine, and if one happens to be full in the evening, there’s sure to be another one nearby.”
For general waste, large underground waste containers are also available at the Winterhafen. Therefore, please note: Do not dispose of hot ashes in these underground containers, as this damages the interior lining of the bins. Hot ashes should always be disposed of in the metal bins provided at the barbecue areas.
The work for the city cleaning department on the banks of the Rhine has become significantly easier since the environmental scouts were deployed. Previously, there was much more litter on the lawns on weekends, which had to be laboriously picked up by the city cleaning department. This has improved thanks to the environmental scouts.
The city administration hopes that the use of reusable containers, as well as citizens taking their own trash home to dispose of it in their own trash cans, will further reduce the amount of waste in the future.
