Official opening of the two bilingual GlobalKids daycare centers in Mainz
Lord Mayor Nino Haase, Head of the Children and Youth Department Jana Schmöller and the Managing Director of GlobalKids Rhein-Main gGmbH, Björn Walden, officially opened the first two bilingual daycare centers in Mainz at an inauguration ceremony today.
The German-English bilingual daycare center in Mainz-Drais has been in operation since January 2026, and the one in Weisenau since April 2026. A total of 125 childcare spots will be available for children, who will be cared for by English- and German-speaking educators. The bilingual daycare centers are designed to support international professionals and their families. The state capital of Mainz and GlobalKids signed the financing agreements for this in September 2025. This laid the foundation for the first public bilingual daycare centers in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Mayor Nino Haase said at the opening of the bilingual GlobalKids daycare centers:
“It is important to me that all children in Mainz enjoy quality childcare. As an attractive location, we also draw many international professionals and their families, and I am pleased that we have now created a suitable offering in this area with the two bilingual daycare centers. As a cosmopolitan state capital, we are demonstrating that we can speak English as a matter of course alongside the local dialect. And, of course, this also promotes the region’s competitiveness. I would like to sincerely thank GlobalKids for the excellent collaboration since planning began in 2024 and for their educational program, which enriches our daycare landscape.”
Jana Schmöller, Head of Social Affairs, emphasized the importance of early childhood education:
“I am proud that we can expand our diverse range of childcare providers in Mainz with an interesting new offering. The provider GlobalKids enriches Mainz’s childcare landscape with two bilingual facilities, and I am convinced that this represents a wonderful addition to the options available for many families. The new daycare center supports children in both German and English, thereby helping multilingual families, for example, to develop and strengthen their language skills. I am delighted that we continue to succeed in bringing new concepts to Mainz that enrich the care and education of our children.”
In the state capital of Mainz, there are currently 62 municipally operated daycare centers. There are 67 privately operated daycare centers, including the two new centers from GlobalKids.
Björn Walden, initiator of the daycare centers and partner at GlobalKids Rhein-Main gGmbH, added: “Our educational concept combines active bilingualism with immersive language acquisition in everyday life. Children learn English and German quite naturally through daily interaction. At the same time, reliable care, clear structures, and a set daily routine provide them with the security and comfort they need for their development.”
