Whether it’s microplastics or other highly persistent chemicals, environmental pollutants are often widespread in cosmetic products. In the workshop “Make Your Own Cosmetics—Know What’s In Them!”, participants will create various personal care and cleaning products using just a few basic ingredients.

They’ll even make their own soap—versatile and with a custom scent. It’s fun, easy on the wallet, and good for the environment all at once. Perhaps this course is also a good idea for making homemade Christmas gifts.
The workshop will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Mainzer Umweltladen (Steingasse 3-9, 55116 Mainz). Since space is limited, please register in advance by email at umweltinformationstadt.mainzde or by phone at 06131 / 12 21 21.

These days, there’s a “special day” for just about everything—including the restroom. It’s officially called World Toilet Day and has been observed every year on November 19 since 2013. While it may sound funny at first, there’s a very serious reason behind it. That’s because there are still many regions around the world that lack universal access to toilets and don’t have a functioning sewage system. There, fecal matter poses the risk of communicable diseases on the one hand, and causes problems with the water supply on the other. And that is exactly what World Toilet Day aims to highlight.

At the Mainz Environmental Store, visitors can test their knowledge on all topics related to toilets, sewer systems, and wastewater treatment plants. There’s a quiz for all ages, and of course, prizes to be won. And for those who want to delve deeper into the topic, the reading corner offers fun, informative, and sometimes even a bit quirky books on the subject.
