Digital technology is increasingly being used in the exhibition area of the Natural History Museum. Computer animations and digital binoculars are used here to allow visitors to enter virtual reality.

An existing smartphone app that allows users to view selected collection and exhibition items in 3D will be expanded to include additional objects. In addition, a digital visitor counting system will soon be installed with funds from the "Neustart" aid package. 

The "Digital Pact for Schools" funding program promotes digital infrastructure in municipal schools. This has enabled 43 municipal schools to be equipped with digital technology (school network infrastructure, whiteboards, and mobile devices). In addition, during the pandemic, students were provided with mobile devices for distance learning where there was a particular need to compensate for social inequalities. In July 2020, a working group on digitization was set up together with representatives of the school types and Mainz Media Education to develop a coordinated digital education strategy. In the "Media Development Planning" and "Equipment Recommendations" working groups, participants regularly exchange information on current developments in the framework conditions. The collaboration is cross-departmental.
