Mainz Public Utilities is in the process of commissioning the open source data platform offered by DKSR (Data Competence Center for Cities and Regions). Initial use cases are planned. 

Particularly in view of the increasing digital provision of administrative services, it is essential to offer citizens an adequate digital infrastructure within municipal buildings. In addition, the changed use of media in digital work and the associated use of different, often mobile devices, requires a powerful digital infrastructure. Consequently, a comprehensive, future-oriented digital infrastructure is to be installed in all areas where the city receives visitors and in buildings where the institution performs official tasks and functions. On the one hand, this includes the needs-based connection of buildings to a gigabit-capable network where this is not yet available. On the other hand, it means setting up comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage in municipal buildings. This project focuses on administrative buildings, local government offices, and meeting places for municipal committees, such as local advisory councils, and all other places open to the public, such as libraries and event venues.  

Eliminating gray spots, comprehensive gigabit-capable network for Mainz. Where the telecommunications companies' own commercial expansion does not result in an adequate network that meets demand, the Economic and Structural Development Department is advocating for subsidized fiber optic expansion by the city. As part of this, funding from federal (gray spot funding) and state (Rhineland-Palatinate) subsidy programs will be applied for for the first time, and a corresponding, publicly subsidized fiber optic expansion will be planned and implemented over the next few years. This is the only way to ensure that Mainz residents and businesses will have access to a comprehensive, gigabit-capable network in the future.

A comprehensive LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) infrastructure is being set up in the Mainz city area.

This infrastructure could be used for applications such as

• Fill levels of used clothing containers (project with waste disposal company)
• Reading meter data

With the help of this network, sensor data could be transmitted to a data platform, for example.

An analysis of the current state of Wi-Fi coverage in public outdoor locations is already available. Based on this, the future strategic expansion of Wi-Fi in Mainz is to be planned. This will take into account current developments (mobile phone usage behavior with regard to large, inexpensive data packages, mobile working, digital infrastructure as a public service, etc.), different user groups (citizens, tourists, young people, visitors to the city center, public transport users, etc.), usage opportunities, and foreseeable future developments. To this end, an assessment will be made of where in Mainz the installation of Wi-Fi hotspots would bring significant added value or where there is a genuine need for them. The result will be a concept with concrete recommendations for action, the necessary budget, and a timetable for implementation.
