Head of Social Affairs Jana Schmöller opens "Cinema of the 50s" for senior citizens
The Mainz retirement home is now offering its day guests weekly retro cinema afternoons in the "Flehlappe" day care center. Jana Schmöller, Head of Social Affairs and Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Mainzer Alten- und Wohnheime gGmbH (MAW), and Oliver Backhaus, Managing Director of MAW, opened the cinema room today.
A screen, cinema furnishings, and classic films from decades past: a special space has been created at the “Flehlappe” day care center at the Mainz retirement home. An activity room has been redesigned so that it can also be used as a mini-cinema in the future. Once a week—on rotating days so that all day guests can participate—old films are shown there in an atmospheric setting. The creation of the retro cinema room was made possible by the support of the Walter and Wanda Winterberg Foundation.
“With the ‘Cinema of the ’50s,’ the Mainz Senior Care Home is sending a clear message that cultural participation does not end at the threshold of senior care facilities. I would like to thank the dedicated team at the ‘Flehlappe’ day care center and the Walter and Wanda Winterberg Foundation for making the guests’ wish to go to the movies a reality,” said Jana Schmöller happily.
The impetus for the project came from the day care staff: they realized that many guests missed going to the movies. However, since a trip to the cinema is no longer possible for most day care guests, the idea arose to bring the cinema into the facility. With the “Cinema of the 50s,” this familiar experience is now returning to everyday life. The screen, the decor, and the atmosphere evoke the feeling of going to the movies as in the old days.
The program combines tranquility and social interaction: Those who don’t want a rest after lunch can find a moment of relaxation in the cinema room away from the regular weekly schedule. Following the screening, discussions about the film, its message, and the era in which it is set invite everyone to share their thoughts.
Oliver Backhaus added: “This project shows what is possible when people are passionate about their work and how important the work of social foundations like the Winterberg Foundation is. We are very pleased to be able to offer our diverse and interested day guests another activity with the cinema.”
