If you move out of an apartment and do not move into another apartment within the country, you must deregister.

The most common situations are moving abroad or deregistering from a secondary residence.

If you move within Germany, you do not need to deregister. It is sufficient to register with your new municipality .

For persons under the age of 16, it is important to ensure that they are deregistered by the persons from whose apartment they are moving out.

You can deregister either in person (by visiting the Citizens' Office) or in writing. Once you have deregistered, you will receive confirmation of your deregistration.

You must deregister with the registration office within two weeks of moving out of the apartment. You can complete the deregistration as early as the week before you move out of the apartment.
