If you move out of an apartment and do not move into another apartment in the country, you must deregister.

The most important cases are moving abroad or deregistering a secondary residence. 

If you move within Germany, you do not need to deregister. It is sufficient to register with your new municipality.

For persons under the age of 16, it is important to ensure that they are deregistered by the persons from whose apartment they are moving out.

You can deregister either in person (by visiting the Citizens' Office) or in writing. Once you have deregistered, you will receive confirmation of your deregistration.

You must deregister within two weeks of moving out of the apartment. You can deregister in the week before moving out of the apartment.

• Identity card or passport, if the person subject to registration is over 16 years of age
• Identity documents of family members who are being deregistered together on a single deregistration form
  • For children: child's passport or birth certificate

The competent authority may request additional documents to verify the information provided (e.g., marriage certificate).
If you send the completed deregistration form to the competent authority by mail, please enclose a copy of the identity documents for yourself and all family members to be deregistered.

If you fail to fulfill your obligation to deregister or do not do so in a timely manner, you are committing an administrative offense that may be punishable by a fine.
