If you want to drive buses, you must have your driver's license extended to include class D, DE, D1, or D1E at the driver's license authority. These extended driver's license classes are limited to 5 years.
What do I need to know?
Service description
To drive buses or vehicle combinations consisting of a bus and a trailer, you need an extended driver's license for class D, DE, D1, or D1E. You can apply for an extension of your driver's license at the driver's license authority in your place of residence. When extending your driver's license to include classes D, DE, D1, and D1E, these are issued for a limited period of 5 years. You must apply for an extension before the expiration date.
Depending on the class, the extended driver's license entitles you to drive different types of buses. To apply for the extension, you must meet various requirements.
Driver's license class D:
- Motor vehicles for the transport of more than 8 persons in addition to the driver
- Trailers with a total weight of up to 750 kg
- Prerequisite driver's license: B
- Minimum age: 24 years or 20 years if you drive buses professionally
Class DE driver's license:
- Motor vehicles for transporting more than 8 people in addition to the driver
- Trailers with a total weight of more than 750 kg
- Required driver's license: D
- Minimum age: 24 years or 20 years if you drive buses professionally
Driver's license class D1:
- Motor vehicles for transporting a maximum of 16 persons in addition to the driver
- Maximum total length: 8 m
- Trailers with a maximum gross weight of 750 kg
- Required driver's license: B
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive buses professionally
Class D1E driver's license:
- Motor vehicles for the transport of up to 16 people in addition to the driver
- Maximum total length: 8 m
- Trailers with a total weight of more than 750 kg
- Required driver's license: D1
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive buses professionally
Application
- You must apply for the extension in person (for identification and signature purposes).
- You can apply for a driver's license extension at the earliest 6 months before you reach the minimum age.
Issuance:
- If you have only applied for one class (e.g., B or A1), the license will be issued immediately after you pass the test by the examiner.
- If you have applied for several classes, the examiner will only issue a test certificate.
- With this, you can apply for a provisional driver's license at the driver's license authority. (additional fee: 11.20 euros or 12 euros during the probationary period)
- The provisional driver's license is valid for a maximum of 3 months and is only valid within the Federal Republic of Germany.
Collection of the card driving license from the driver's license authority:
- in person
- by an authorized person
Prerequisites
- Your primary residence is in Germany.
- You have a driver's license with the required class.
- You have reached the minimum age for the respective class.
- You are physically and mentally fit to drive a bus.
- You have successfully completed the theoretical and practical training and examination for driving a bus, the scope of which varies depending on the class applied for.
- Your primary residence is in Mainz.

Remark
Notes
- You must have passed the theory test before starting the practical test. You may take the theory test at the earliest 3 months and the practical test at the earliest 1 month before reaching the minimum age.
- The application will expire if:
- you have not passed the theory test within 12 months of the test application being received.
- You have not passed the practical exam within 12 months of passing the theoretical exam.
- The provisional driver's license is valid for a maximum of 3 months and is only valid within the Federal Republic of Germany.
Please note:
- All EU card driving licenses issued since January 19, 2013, are valid for 15 years from the date of issue. This time limit refers only to the validity of the document and not to the granting of the driving license.
- All driver's licenses (including card driver's licenses) issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged by January 19, 2033.

If you wish to use your driver's license for commercial purposes, you must comply with the regulations governing professional driver qualifications (BKrFQG).

What do I need to bring or submit?
- Valid identity card or passport with current registration certificate
- Current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view)
- Eye test certificate (not older than 2 years)
- Proof of physical and mental fitness (not older than 1 year)
- Current driver's license
- Details of the driving school
- Proof of participation in a first aid training course
- Police clearance certificate (not older than 3 months)
- Performance psychology assessment (not older than 1 year)
- Current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view), no digital code possible!
Note:
Since May 1, 2025, the rule for passport photos for identity cards and passports is that you must submit a digital passport photo to the registration authority. However, this requirement does not apply to the driver's license authority and therefore does not affect the application for driver's license documents. Please also note that the driver's license authorities do not have the technical equipment to take photos on site. You must therefore submit passport photos in analog form, preferably together with the complete application documents, to the driver's license authority.
- If applicable, proof of basic qualification in accordance with the Professional Driver Qualification Act for commercial goods or passenger transport on public roads
- If applicable, a copy of the index card from the issuing authority (if the previous driver's license was not issued by the Mainz city administration)
- For commercial use of classes D1, D, D1E, and DE, you must apply for a driver qualification certificate (FQN).
- To speed up the issuance of the new driver's license, you can request the index card transcript in advance by telephone from the original issuing driver's license authority.
If you need to pick up the card driver's license at the driver's license authority, you will need:

- Letter from the driver's license authority
- Identification documents of both persons
- Written power of attorney

How much does it cost and how can I pay?
Fees
The fee is based on the schedule of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
An additional shipping fee will be charged if the driver's license is sent directly to your home address.
- Extension of driving license: €45.10 (€45.90 with probationary period)
- Issuance of a provisional driver's license: €11.20 or €12
- For direct shipping by the Federal Printing Office in Berlin: €6.50 (only possible to a limited extent)
