60,000 euros for integration and the skilled workers of tomorrow

The state capital of Mainz is sending a clear signal for integration and securing skilled workers: an additional three-year grant totaling 60,000 euros is being provided for the "AzubiGo!" project run by Ökumenische Flüchtlingshilfe Oberstadt e. V. (Ecumenical Refugee Aid Oberstadt).

“AzubiGo!” provides targeted support to apprentices with refugee or migrant backgrounds. The numbers speak for themselves: since the beginning of 2025 alone, the number of young people receiving support has risen significantly; currently, more than 20 apprentices are already benefiting from the program. A partnership agreement with BBS II/Sophie-Scholl-Schule has further strengthened this collaboration.

Jana Schmöller, Head of Social Affairs, emphasizes the importance of this support:
“When young people begin an apprenticeship despite major hurdles, they deserve every bit of support we can give them. ‘AzubiGo!’ shows what is possible when commitment meets real opportunities. I am very pleased to see how new prospects are emerging here—not only for individuals but also for our city as a community. That is why we support this project with full conviction.”

In addition to tutoring and German language support, the project also offers job-specific language meetups and social-educational guidance. Particularly important: It specifically targets trainees who are often not sufficiently supported by existing support programs, such as those in the fields of nursing and education.

The project has already achieved impressive results: Currently, 34 trainees from various fields are being supported, including, for example, aspiring educators, nursing staff, and mechatronics technicians. Additional trainees are on a waiting list.

“The support from the City of Mainz sends a strong signal to us. It enables us to respond to rising demand and ensure the long-term quality of our work,” says Bruno Hoffmann, Executive Director of Ökumenische Flüchtlingshilfe Oberstadt. “Our goal is to successfully guide even more young people through their training.”

The “AzubiGo!” project is funded through a five-year grant from the City of Mainz, as well as through foundations and private donations. With this additional multi-year funding from the school fund, the City of Mainz is now providing the necessary planning security to further expand the project and support even more trainees on their path to a successful professional future.

The additional funding of 60,000 euros comes from the Ex-Jesuit and Welsch Nuns School Fund. As a municipal foundation of the state capital of Mainz, this fund is used to allocate surpluses generated from the foundation’s assets specifically to support the general school system in Mainz.

“AzubiGo!” has become an integral part of Mainz’s educational and integration landscape and is already regarded as a model project in the region.
