Student ticket in Mainz: price remains stable until the end of 2026
Together, the City of Mainz, Mainzer Stadtwerke (MSW) and Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) have found a solution for the student ticket for 2026, so that the price of 31 euros per month will remain unchanged until the end of 2026.
“It’s excellent news that we were able to reach a sustainable solution together by the end of 2026,” emphasizes MVG Managing Director Florian Wiesemann. Supervisory Board Chair Janina Steinkrüger adds that this was by no means a given, given the overall strained financial situation. This clear signal is now all the more important for young people and families in Mainz.
This solution was reached in close coordination between Mayor Nino Haase, City Utilities CEO Daniel Gahr, Mayor Daniel Köbler, and Transportation Commissioner Janina Steinkrüger. Mayor Nino Haase thanked everyone involved for their goal-oriented and swift cooperation: “This gives students and their families planning security for their daily commute to school even beyond the summer break.”
Outlook from 2027: talks necessary
It is currently unclear what will happen with the student ticket starting in 2027. One thing is certain: a long-term solution will also require the support of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. According to the State School Act, students who live more than four kilometers from their secondary school are already entitled to have their commuting costs fully covered by the City of Mainz. However, regardless of the distance to school, mobility is a key component of participation and independence for children and young people. This aspect is important when setting prices for public transit passes for students.
The City of Mainz and MVG recognize that a sustainable and socially balanced solution is only possible through cooperation across all levels. Therefore, further discussions with all stakeholders will begin early this summer to develop plans for the period starting in 2027.
