Cleaning campaign launched in Lotharstrasse - for a shiny Mainz
A comprehensive cleaning campaign has begun in Lotharstraße, which marks the start of a city center-wide floor cleaning as part of the #mainzglaenzt campaign. The aim is to carry out a complete deep clean of the street area, including the removal of chewing gum residue.
This is an additional measure that goes beyond the regular street cleaning required by the city’s bylaws. Public trash cans on Lotharstraße had already been thoroughly cleaned previously—making this current deep cleaning the second so-called “cosmetic” cleaning measure in this area.
Among other things, a so-called JADON machine is being used, a specialized device for deep-cleaning heavily used paved surfaces. The machine operates using particularly powerful high-pressure technology and heated water without chemical additives. This allows even deeply embedded dirt to be loosened, dirt that has become embedded in the pavement over many years—in some cases, decades. In addition to mechanical cleaning, numerous staff members are also on site to remove loosened residues and finish the surfaces. The cleaning process is therefore technically complex and requires a significant amount of manpower.
"The difference that is already visible is huge. It’s worth subjecting the pedestrian zones—from the ground up to the trash cans—to this deep cleaning so that Mainz shines. For me, cleanliness is the foundation of a sense of safety, quality of life, and an attractive downtown. This initiative should be made a permanent feature, and I am convinced that the public supports these additional investments in our city," says Mayor Nino Haase.
During the work, there may be temporary and section-by-section closures in the pedestrian area. Increased noise levels are also to be expected. Due to the heat generated by the high-pressure cleaning, water vapor may form at times. Additionally, short-term soiling of storefront windows may occur. These will, of course, be removed following the street cleaning.
The attached photos already show the first visible improvements and demonstrate the clear before-and-after effect of the cleaning.
This initiative will gradually ensure a cleaner cityscape. The city therefore asks all residents and visitors to support the teams on site: Please dispose of your trash in the designated bins and do not litter. The city sincerely thanks all residents for their understanding during the cleaning work, which is expected to continue through March 5, 2026.
Together for a sparkling Mainz.
