Mainz shares: living sustainably together
Sharing is the new having! In cooperation with Kommunale Abfallwirtschaft Mainz und Mainz-Bingen (KAW), the City of Mainz and its Agenda Office are launching the "Mainz teilt!" campaign. Anyone who would like to lend out everyday objects or has always wondered whether you always have to "have" everything yourself can take part.
Should I buy a drill just to make a single hole in the wall? Do I really need my own camping gear for a short trip to the lake with friends? Maybe I won’t even like camping
at all… That’s why renting or sharing is often a sensible alternative. And maybe your neighbors have exactly what you need and would be happy to share it.
Simple principle
Sticker sheets, flyers, and posters are available at the Environmental Store (Steingasse 3-9). By displaying these materials in the building’s hallway, you can raise awareness of the campaign among neighbors, and the stickers can be placed on your own mailbox. These stickers show what items you have at home and would like to share. Your neighbors can do the same.
“The benefits of ‘Mainz Shares’ are obvious,” says Sabine Gresch from the Agenda Office. “Sharing strengthens the community, sharing conserves resources, and sharing saves money on top of that—all in the spirit of sustainability.”
Cordula Zimper from KAW emphasizes that the waste aspect is particularly important to her. “Large amounts of waste are generated during production, transport, and disposal. And if, for example, an electronic device is used only once, a lot of waste is created for little benefit.” This is where “Mainz teilt” comes in. The flyer, which is also available at the environmental store, provides information on the legal aspects of swapping and where else in Mainz you can swap and give things away.
“With this low-threshold campaign, we want to show how easy it is to live sustainably—and do so in a fun way,” says Sabine Gresch. Because, of course, the stickers are in the Mainz dialect. For example, “fer zum bossele” is for tools of all kinds, “Spass uff de Gass” for boules or badminton equipment, and “mer wolle feiern” for grills, sound systems, and the like. “We really hope this campaign is well received,” says Cordula Zimper. “Sharing makes people happy and strengthens our sense of community.”
