If your address has changed, for example after moving house, you must have your new address entered on your identity card. The chip on the identity card will be changed and a sticker with your new address will be affixed to your identity card.

Even if you move abroad, no longer have an address in Germany, and your address abroad is not yet fixed, your identity card must be changed. The address sticker will then state that you no longer have an address in Germany.

• You have already registered your new address with your local registration office.

• You must register in person at the local government office in your new place of residence. 
  • You must present your valid identity card and your registration confirmation.
  • The citizens' office at your new place of residence will change the address on the chip in your identity card and affix a sticker with your new address to your identity card. 
• You can authorize another person in writing to change the address on your identity card at the citizens' office at your new place of residence on your behalf.
• If your municipality offers the change of registration as a digital service (electronic residence registration), you can also use this. With digital re-registration, the address data stored on the chip is updated digitally. You will receive the sticker for your identity card by mail.
