Commissioning of two vehicles for the youth traffic school
The City of Mainz and the Mainz Police Headquarters officially put two new vehicles for the Mobile Youth Traffic School into service on Friday, May 29, 2026. The vehicles replace two previously used vans, which had to be decommissioned after around 30 years of operation for economic and safety reasons.
The traffic safety education required by the curriculum for elementary school students—particularly pedestrian safety training and bicycle safety instruction—has been provided in Mainz for many years by the Mobile Youth Traffic School. In addition, a central traffic training area has been available at the MEWA Arena since March 2026.
Ata Delbasteh, Head of the School Department, emphasized the importance of the investment for children’s traffic safety: “Traffic education is a central component of school education and contributes significantly to the safety of our children in everyday life. With the new vehicles, we are creating modern and reliable conditions for a state-of-the-art Youth Traffic School in Mainz.”
The basis for the project was the circular from the Ministry of Education, Interior, and Economic Affairs on “Bicycle Training in the Youth Traffic School” as well as the administrative regulation “Traffic Education in Schools” from 1999.
The procurement of the vehicles took place in close cooperation between the Mainz City School Board, the traffic safety advisors of the Mainz Police Headquarters, and the City of Mainz Waste Management Department, with its central vehicle workshop serving as the technical service unit.
Following a successful tender process, two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 315 CDI vehicles were ordered in September 2025. The purchase cost amounted to approximately 120,000 euros. Added to this were costs for the interior fit-out by the company Hanzlik from Limburg amounting to approximately 25,000 euros, as well as an additional 2,500 euros for the vehicle wrapping. The total cost thus amounted to 147,500 euros.
Police Chief Reiner Hamm stated: “The new vehicles enable our traffic safety advisors to conduct bicycle training in a safe, modern, and needs-based manner. In doing so, we are investing directly in the traffic safety of our youngest road users.”
