Homemade "billets" on prescription

Pumpkin in bread

They are crispy, hearty, and simply delicious: "Knüppel," bread cups to eat with your meal. Whether with chili con or sin carne, with guacamole and salmon, with goat cheese, caramelized nuts, onions, and mushrooms, or with scrambled eggs for breakfast: homemade and packed with the power of whole grains, these homemade creations are the Mainz Neustadt Pharmacy's best recipe for acute hunger pangs. "We wanted a product that we could offer in different variations throughout the day," explain Marc Jenne and Walery Engel, the two operators of the café-bar-bistro on Frauenlobplatz. Inspired by Eastern European soup dishes served in bread bowls, the two former Mainz business students created the dish and gave it the name "Knüppel."

Lamps made from old pharmacy bottles

Guests can find the various variations in the "package insert" – because the flair of the former pharmacy is not only reflected in the interior design with its long counter. The love is in the details here: candles are placed in brown glass apothecary jars, labels such as "Kalium Citricum" and "Aq. Foeniculi" (fennel water) are reminiscent of the former purpose of the cozy restaurant with its dark wood tones. A striking feature is the large board at the end of the room, which always displays the latest tips for going out. This is practical for anyone who wants to continue their evening after their drink, with or without a "Knüppel."

The "billets" are offered in various creations

Even those with a sweet tooth leave Neustadt Pharmacy with a satisfied smile. Every day, homemade cakes and pies are displayed in a glass case next to the counter. The large selection of beverages also includes beers, soft drinks, and coffee from Mainz. Additional recipes are available upon request!
