The volunteer project group and the Office for Youth and Family Affairs plan and organize the OPEN OHR Festival. It is a political festival that focuses on a current topic. It always takes place at Pentecost at the Citadel in Mainz. There is music, theater, cabaret, film, entertainment, and panel discussions on the topic. In addition, the staff organize and coordinate cultural events for children and young people, such as the Children's Theater Festival, the Mainz Klepper Competition, and the Grill 'em all band festival.
During the summer holidays, there is the Mainz Holiday Card for children and young people from Mainz (aged 6 to 18). With the Holiday Card, everyone can travel by bus and tram in Mainz and Wiesbaden. The Holiday Card offers great day trips and activities to get involved in.
Children and young people are just as affected by many political decisions as adults. The Coordination Office for Child and Youth Participation supports young people in expressing their opinions and wishes and helping to shape their city. Various opportunities for participation are available to all interested parties, e.g., at the youth conference, in playground projects, and in Youth Speaks for Itself in the Youth Welfare Committee.
