The living room of the new town

In Mainz’s Neustadt district lies a place that radiates warmth through genuine solidarity: Café Krumm & Schepp. It sees itself as a “living room for everyone,” where people from all walks of life come together. Readings, game nights, and hands-on activities create an open and welcoming atmosphere.
Since its founding in the winter of 2024, the café has relied on a solidarity-based pricing model: guests pay what they can and want for drinks; meals made from rescued food are free. Every day, volunteers collect surplus baked goods from bakeries and other food items. This sustainable concept is labor-intensive. Over 40 volunteers regularly pitch in—not always easy, especially during the day. In addition to its culinary offerings, Krumm & Schepp also sees itself as an educational space: particularly on Tuesdays, when the café is closed to the public, workshops with school classes are regularly held on the premises. The topics include sustainability, appreciating food, and reducing plastic waste. The goal is to raise awareness among young people about using resources more consciously.
It goes without saying that a project like this doesn’t run itself. This makes it all the more important to contribute to its continued existence through donations, gift certificates, or rental sponsorships. Anyone who wants to get involved can do so in a variety of ways—whether as a food rescuer, on the education team, or in the café operations. The project is also active on the “Foodsharing Mainz” platform.
And anyone who just wants to stop by is welcome anytime—for a cup of coffee, to attend the next cultural event, or simply to enjoy the special atmosphere.
What is food sharing?
- Food sharing is all about saving food from being thrown away. People share leftover food that’s still good—for example, from their own refrigerators or from businesses like bakeries and supermarkets.
- It is passed on to neighbors, placed on public shelves (so-called “fair share” stations), or shared at gatherings.
- This way, less food ends up in the trash, and others can take it for free. The idea: sharing instead of wasting—good for the environment and for community.
- And best of all—anyone can join in!
