The Mainz Fire Department is divided into a professional fire department with two locations and eleven volunteer fire departments, each with a youth fire department.
Fire station 1 (main fire station) of the professional fire department is located in Mainz-Bretzenheim, Jakob-Leischner-Straße 11; fire station 2 is located in Mainz-Neustadt, Kaiser-Karl-Ring 38.
The districts of Bretzenheim, Drais, Ebersheim, Finthen, Gonsenheim, Hechtsheim, Laubenheim, Marienborn, Mombach, Stadt-Mitte, and Weisenau each have an equipment store for their volunteer fire department units.
In addition to traditional firefighting duties—extinguishing fires and assisting with traffic accidents—the Mainz Fire Department also focuses on training and continuing education for firefighters and the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
In addition, the professional fire department performs other tasks in disaster control and operates a supra-local control center. Preventive fire protection measures, such as advising builders and architects, reviewing construction plans, conducting hazard prevention inspections, or administrative tasks, such as billing for fee-based operations, round out the range of tasks.
